There’s one thing that can ruin a great portrait and that is bad skin. I’m talking about spotty, porous and/or blotchy skin, but not in the way that you are thinking. I’m talking about the results of the various “quick win” skin retouching methods widely used by us non-professional retouchers out there. One of the most popular methods is to even out the texture of the skin by blurring it.
While this does give the appearance of smooth skin, it is often overdone and leaves the skin looking plastic and false. Being an amateur photographer I don’t have the money to hire a professional retoucher or the time to spend hours on one image. However if I was trying to sell my services to a top range make-up company I may invest in one, but that’s not going to happen any time soon […but I’m open to offers if there are any…]. (more…)
